Book Reviews.

Born Standing Up by Steve Martin

Published by Scribner, September 8, 2008. 224 pages.

Book Review by Aaron LaFontaine

In 1977, I annoyed my parents by endlessly playing “Let’s Get Small”. An album by comedian Steve Martin, on the stereo system in the family room.

In addition to the repetition, they did not get the humour. I think I got most of it - and it made me laugh.

As much as I enjoy comedy (particularly stand-up comedy), I am more intrigued by the mechanics and craft of stand-up comedy. “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with Jerry Seinfeld and “Comedian, also with Jerry Seinfeld, explore the craft and hard work of stand-up comedy.

“Born Standing Up” is Steve Martin’s comedic autobiography. It explores his life in comedy and explains how he became a wild and crazy guy. Perhaps more interesting is how he explains how he stopped being a wild and crazy guy. Both took hard work and dedicated focus.

Martin wrote this book in 2007, and I totally missed it. It took until 2020 before I discovered it.It is incredibly interesting, befitting a book by a guy famous for performing with a toy arrow through his head, playing the banjo (very well) and recognized as a leading collector of modern art.

I would suggest that, if Steve Martin, comedy or an exploration of how someone discovers and hones their craft is an interest, this book will be of interest and you should not miss it.

The Gulf is a detailed and exhaustive work of environmental history that takes us from the pre-Columbian to the present. A rich world of sea captains, Victorian ornithologists, sport fishermen, and past presidents.

With clear crisp prose Davis opens up a world of flora and fauna jammed up hard against centuries of heavy industry, and tourism. Comprehensive, yet lyrical and lucid, it is highly recommended.

The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea
